How do the different types of EV charging differ?

There are several types of EV charging, which differ in charging speed, equipment used and voltage. They can be divided into 3 main types as follows:

  • Other names: Mode 2 / Mode 3 / Level 1 / Level 2 (depending on the standard)
  • Charging point used: household socket (Mode 2) or Wallbox (Mode 3)
  • Charging time: about 6-12 hours (depending on battery size)
  • Power: 2.3 – 22 kW
  • Common connectorsType 1 (popular in Japan and America) Type 2 (popular in Europe and Thailand)
  • Type 1 (popular in Japan and America)
  • Type 2 (popular in Europe and Thailand)
  • Easy to install, runs on household power
  • Suited to overnight charging at home
  • Slow charging, not suited to long journeys or urgent charging
  • Other names: Mode 4 / DC Fast Charging
  • Charging point used: public EV charging stations
  • Charging time: about 20-60 minutes (from 20% to 80%)
  • Power: from 50 kW to 350 kW
  • Common connectors: CCS (Combined Charging System) – Europe/America CHAdeMO – Japan (commonly used by Nissan Leaf) GB/T – China
  • CCS (Combined Charging System) – Europe/America
  • CHAdeMO – Japan (commonly used by Nissan Leaf)
  • GB/T – China
  • Very fast charging, suited to long journeys
  • Increasingly available at ordinary service stations
  • High station cost
  • Frequent use may make the battery heat up and degrade faster than AC charging
  • Power: up to 350 kW
  • Time: charges to about 80% within 15-30 minutes (depending on what the car supports)

Suited to: newer EVs that support high-power charging, such as Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model 3/Y, etc.

Which charger can your home take?

The right charger depends on your meter size, your existing electrical panel and the distance from the panel to your parking spot — not just your car model. Send photos of your panel and parking spot on LINE and our team will give you a first assessment, or see the four installation options and their pros and cons on our installation service page.
