Short daily drive: do I need to charge my EV tonight?

Published

You do not need to charge every night if the battery still has enough for tomorrow. Charging every night does not wear the battery faster either, as long as you do not charge to 100% every time or often let it drop below 10%.

Does charging every night wear out the battery?

No. The car's Battery Management system already prevents overcharging. What wears the battery faster is often letting it drop below 10% and charging to 100% every time when not needed. Read more: Does daily charging degrade the battery?

If not every night, when should I charge?

A simple rule of thumb:

Situation · Recommendation
SituationRecommendation
Enough battery for tomorrow with a marginSkip tonight
Battery is low, or a long trip tomorrowCharge tonight
Normal daily useSet a stop limit of about 80-90%
Before a long tripCharge to full as needed

When is electricity cheapest?

On a TOU meter, Off-Peak is Monday-Friday 22:00-09:00 the next day, plus all day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Plugging in when you get home and scheduling charging to start after 22:00 clearly lowers your bill. Read more: Save on electricity by changing when you charge

How does a home charger help?

Wall chargers such as Model U Gen 2 can schedule charging in the EVEASY x TUYA/Smart Life app. Plug in when you get home and let the charger start during Off-Peak. If you drive short distances and are not ready for a wall charger yet, see our portable chargers, or choose the right power for your home in the 7.4, 11 or 22 kW guide.

Summary

With a short daily drive you do not need to charge every night, but nightly charging does no harm. Set a stop limit of about 80-90% and charge during Off-Peak. To install a home charger, send photos of your electrical panel via LINE @eveasy or call 093-359-2207.

Which charger can your home take?

The right charger depends on your meter size, your existing electrical panel and the distance from the panel to your parking spot — not just your car model. Send photos of your panel and parking spot on LINE and our team will give you a first assessment, or see the four installation options and their pros and cons on our installation service page.
