What Is a Shock Protection Device (RCD)?

Why does it matter for EV charging? When installing an EV charger (EV Charger), safety must be the first priority — especially the "shock protection device", or RCD (Residual Current Device), which automatically cuts the power when there is leakage current or current flowing to earth, to prevent electric shock, electrocution and fire.

What does an RCD do?

  • Cuts the circuit immediately when even a small leakage current occurs (e.g. 30mA)
  • Helps protect against electric shock and short circuits
  • Especially important for EV charging, with both wall-mounted and portable chargers

EV Easy recommends: use only an RCD that is suitable for EV chargers

  • Choose an RCD Type B: handles both AC and DC leakage current, suitable for every type of EV charging system
  • Test it every month: press the TEST button to check that the RCD can still cut the circuit normally
  • Helps protect both people and property from electrical accidents

EV Easy chargers, both wall-mounted (Wall Charger) and portable (Portable Charger)

  • Come with automatic power cut-off
  • Meet CE safety standards
  • Installed by expert technicians
  • Backed by after-sales service and warranty

For maximum safety, we recommend having your electrical system installed by a certified technician and choosing an EV charger with complete electrical protection.

Which charger can your home take?

The right charger depends on your meter size, your existing electrical panel and the distance from the panel to your parking spot — not just your car model. Send photos of your panel and parking spot on LINE and our team will give you a first assessment, or see the four installation options and their pros and cons on our installation service page.
