Many people are still unsure whether their home's existing electricity meter can support EV charging.
Today EV Easy explains it simply, so you can choose and use your charger as safely and efficiently as possible.
Each meter size and its use with an EV charger
15(45) meter
- Handles a current of around ~35A
- Not recommended for a 7.4kW charger (which draws 32A)
- Risk of power cuts, voltage drops or the meter tripping when used together with other household appliances
30(100) meter
- Handles a current of ~75A
- Suitable for typical homes installing an EV charger
- Can supply both the charger and household appliances at the same time
In short:
If you will use a 7.4kW (32A) EV charger
- you should switch to a 30(100) or 5(100) meter, so it can be used safely and at full performance without voltage drops or overloading.
