Don't Forget to Check: "How Many Phases Does Your Car Support?"
One of the most common mistakes people make when buying an EV charger (EV Charger) is choosing a unit that doesn't match the home's electrical system, or doesn't match the car's charging capability. This can mean spending money unnecessarily and not getting full performance.
EV chargers generally come in 2 types
- 1-phase charger, maximum power ~7.4kW: suits cars that support a 1-phase home supply (e.g. typical homes with a 5(100) or 30(100) meter)
- 3-phase charger, maximum power ~11–22kW: suits homes with a 3-phase supply and cars that support 3-phase charging
Check before you buy! What kind of supply does your car support?
- Car supports 1-phase → a 7.4kW charger is enough
- Car supports 3-phase and the home has a 3-phase supply → choose an 11kW or 22kW charger to get full performance
Note: if the car only supports 1-phase but you choose an 11kW charger, it will only charge at ~3.6kW
Advice from EV Easy
We recommend that customers check with the car manufacturer or contact an expert electrician before installation, to choose an EV charger that suits both your car and your home's electrical system, so you can charge quickly, safely and with the best value.
Which charger can your home take?
The right charger depends on your meter size, your existing electrical panel and the distance from the panel to your parking spot — not just your car model. Send photos of your panel and parking spot on LINE and our team will give you a first assessment, or see the four installation options and their pros and cons on our installation service page.
